TUG of WAR Match Report
The WCWRA Team Captain was Anders Price, son of Wendy and Colin. The team, raised entirely by Anders, was a typical cross-section of any Wimbledon community, being 50/50 English and Polish.
Prior to the competition we arranged two evening practice sessions but got largely different groups at each one so we only got the team together properly 30 minutes before the competition itself.
Our team learnt a lot during the competitions. At the outset we were defeated by the Hand & Racquet (0-3) but after losing the first pull to the Rangers we changed our tactics and beat them, but for some arcane reason, we only competed against them twice when we competed three times against everyone else! In our final event we beat the Royal Mail (3-0), for a total of 4 points.
The weather for the Village Fair had been very good for most of the day but sadly it rained very heavily late in the day. The later contests were conducted in a downpour but I don’t think that the teams noticed the rain once they started to pull!
When the team retired to the pub there was a real buzz and lots of talk of tactics. There was frustration that we did not manage to connect together from the start as a team and get that technique on the first few pulls. The team is now looking at other competitions that are being held as we all had such fun - even as losers!
The organizers say that they too have learnt a lot from this competition. Next year will be better organized.
I hope that you have all made an appropriate contribution to the Jack Brown Charity Appeal. Clive Hilton, Team Manager
